We care about environment at the Flamingo Cancún Hotel by being part of the Sea Turtle Protection Program developed by the municipal authorities; endangered species like sea turtles need our protection in order to guarantee their survival in the world.
They are reptiles just like the crocodiles, lizards and snakes. They have two flippers in the front and two in the back that are very helpful under the sea and out of it. They also have a shell on their back which is very heavy. Sea turtles can live up to a 100 years.
Each female turtle deposits between 50 and 100 eggs, since unfortunately only one turtle in 100 reaches the adult age.
Sea turtles lay their eggs in the shores of Cancun at the beginning of May and it ends by late October.
These are the most important activities to be held during the program:
Night walk daily
Protection of the female turtles, when they lay their eggs
Transportation of the eggs to a safe nest away from predators
Liberation of the baby turtles
Awareness campaign with guests and hotel crew
Nowadays they are 8 species of sea turtles of wich 7 lay their eggs in Mexico and 4 arrive to the shores of Quintana Roo to deposit their eggs:
